It seems to me that people who are looking to buy a car will take their time selecting their ideal dealership. But for life altering decisions, such as who to entrust their plastic surgery to, and in what facility, they oftentimes take a more casual approach. I’d like to see that changed because by choosing your plastic surgeon wisely you’re improving the odds in favor of a happy result. I advise all my patients to take their time when making this important decision.
You’ve often heard me stress my substantiated view that plastic surgery is best left in the hands of a doctor who is board-certified specifically in plastic surgery. Although I don’t choose to perform general surgery I am trained in it, and during my more than 25 years of experience in plastic surgery, I have called upon this training to my patient’s advantage in the operating arena.
When visiting a plastic surgery center and before consenting to a procedure I suggest that you get answers to some very important questions. In addition to your surgeon, is your anesthesiologist also board certified? Are the other members of your surgeon’s surgical team specialists in plastic surgery as well? Have they worked with your surgeon for several years? Is the operating room a state-of-the –art environment documented by its accreditation? There is still more that you can do to assure yourself that you are in the best hands.
