Since our plastic surgery center was featured on the Real Housewives of New Jersey, an interesting thing has happened: more people seem to be thinking about undergoing cosmetic surgery themselves!
A recent study by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons confirms the correlation between reality television and an increase in procedures. The study looked at more than 2000 college women and showed that when people watch cosmetic surgery on reality television, it creates a more favorable attitude towards this type of surgery and a decreased fear of the risks associated with it.
Part of the reason is that these shows increase the average American’s knowledge of the procedures available. And seeing the consultation and surgery right from your living room somehow decreases the fear of actually having those procedures yourself.
As a plastic surgeon who takes great pride in helping my patients improve the way they look and feel, I only caution you about one thing: the ultimate responsibility of helping patients understand both the possible risks and the rewards of cosmetic procedures needs to remain in the hands of your plastic surgeon, not television.
