Over the years many of my lip augmentation patients have asked if there was a more permanent one-time solution to keep their lips full and beautiful. As I’ve noted before, the field of plastic surgery is constantly renewing and surpassing my expectations. Such is the case with PermaLip™, a permanent facial implant made of soft, contoured silicone that can be removed at any time.
Now, for those patients whose busy schedules don’t allow for regularly scheduled appointments to keep their temporary injectible lip filler doing its job, we can offer a one-time surgical procedure. Because PermaLip has a smooth surface it minimizes the chances for tissue ingrowth. And should a patient decide to regain her original lip shape, it can be removed in a rather straight-forward procedure.
PermaLip is available in a number of sizes to harmonize with the unique facial characteristics of each patient. During our initial consultation, you and I will determine which PermaLip implant is right for you.
When discussing the possibility of choosing PermaLip, my patients at the Robert Zubowski MD Center for Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery in Paramus NJ, often inquire about what they can expect post-operatively. In general, most patients report some swelling and slightly tender lips. There may be some bruising also, but these conditions usually subside after about a week. The majority of discomfort, however, usually resolves itself at 24-48 hours, although sensitivity to light and medium pressure will last for approximately two weeks. To limit post-operative soreness I like to place my patients on an oral as well as a topical course of Arnica Montana, which has been shown to decrease bruising and swelling. You will begin to see the results of your procedure possibly after several days, once the initial swelling resolves.
